This wine pops with fleshy red fruit, white pepper and woodsy, sap characters. The palate is round and primary-fruit driven, but it hints at depth and complexity yet to come. The juicy berries are woven through with chalky, savory tannins and spicy and sap linger on the finish. Drink now–2030. -Christina Pickard

Translucent ruby-red. Intensely perfumed Chambord, cherry cola, incense and potpourri aromas show fine definition and hints of woodsmoke, vanilla and succulent herbs. Blends fruity and savory character with a deft hand, offering earth-tinged red fruit, spicecake, botanical herb and floral pastille flavors that turn sweeter through the back half. Fine-grained tannins add shape to the impressively long finish, which echoes the floral and spice notes.

Measured use of oak helps to highlight the intrinsic potential for complexity of the Sexton Vineyard. 2020 was a vintage with particularly low yields with small bunches of intense yet fresh fruit. Giant Steps made the best of it, seen here in a wine with lemon, apple and melon, underpinned by a strong mineral backbone, firm acidity and honeyed richness. Good ageing potential.
